New SEER2 Efficiency Requirements Are On The Way!

Find Out What The New SEER2 Regulations Mean For You

Starting on January 1st, 2023, the minimum SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) of all new air conditioner condensing units, heat pumps, packaged units and mini-split systems will increase. For the first time ever, the new SEER standards (dubbed SEER2) will also vary by region to take into account the varying temperatures found across the country.

What does this mean for you? Well, long term, it will mean savings on energy, as all newly installed units will have the latest technology for high efficiency. This will make them better for the environment as well. But in the short term, it means there’ll be a price increase on getting a new unit installed – as much as $4000! So you may want to consider upgrading your unit now before the new standards take effect.

What Are The New Standards?

Air Conditioning Condensing Units

For air conditioners in the North region, the minimum efficiency increases from 13.0 SEER to 14.0 SEER, while in the South and Southwest regions it increases from 14.0 SEER to 15.0 SEER. In the North, units manufactured before January 1st, 2023 that are 13.0 SEER may still be installed, but in the South and Southwest, those units may not be installed and must be sold to locations in the North.

Heat Pumps

Heat pump requirements are nationwide, regardless of region, and are increasing from 14.0 SEER to 15.0 SEER. Any units manufactured before January 1st, 2023 that are 14.0 SEER may still be installed in all regions.

Single Packaged Units

Single packaged units must comply with all SEER2 changes and meet the minimum rating of 13.4 SEER2. Any 14.0 SEER unit manufactured before January 1st, 2023 may still be installed.

Mini Splits

All mini split systems will be subject to the same regional requirements as air conditioner condensing units as of January 1st, 2023.

What Action Should I Take?

Is your HVAC system close to needing replacement? Then there’s no better time. 14.0 SEER systems are still highly energy efficient, and more affordable at this time. Once the new standards are in place, the efficiency will be even higher – but so will the cost for a replacement.
