The Core Difference: How Each Setting Works
Before diving into expert strategies, let’s quickly break down what happens behind your walls in each mode:
AUTO Mode: The blower fan runs only when your system is actively heating or cooling. Once your home hits the set temperature on the thermostat, the whole system (compressor, furnace, and fan) shuts down.
ON Mode: The blower fan runs continuously 24/7, circulating air through your ductwork non-stop, regardless of whether your AC or heater is actively running.
Option 1: Why HVAC Techs Choose "AUTO"
For about 80% of the year, most of our technicians keep their personal thermostats set to AUTO.
Here’s why:
1. Superior Dehumidification in Hot Summers
When your air conditioner runs, moisture condenses on the cold indoor evaporator coil and drips down the drain pan.
If your fan shuts off when the cooling cycle ends (AUTO mode), that moisture stays in the pan and drains outside. However, if the fan stays ON, it blows warm air right over those wet coils, evaporating that moisture back into your living space.
Tech Secret: If your house feels clammy or muggy even with the AC running, switching your fan from ON to AUTO is often the instant fix.
2. Lower Monthly Utility Bills
Running a standard blower fan continuously can add $15 to $50+ per month to your electricity bill, depending on whether you have an older standard motor or a modern variable-speed motor. AUTO ensures the fan only runs when necessary.
3. Less Frequent Filter Changes & Wear
Continuous air movement means your air filter works 24 hours a day, clogging up twice as fast. It also puts continuous wear and tear on the blower motor bearings.
Option 2: When HVAC Techs Switch to "ON"
Even though AUTO is the general default, there are specific situations where our techs intentionally flip the switch to ON:
1. High Allergy Season (Spring & Fall)
If pollen counts are spiking or someone in your family suffers from severe seasonal allergies, flipping the fan to ON turns your HVAC system into a whole-house air purifier. Air is continuously pulled through your filtration system, trapping dust, dander, and pollen instead of letting them settle on furniture.
Note: If you run your fan continuously for filtration, make sure you're using at least a MERV 8 to MERV 11 filter and checking it monthly.
2. Eliminating Hot & Cold Spots in Two-Story Homes
Does your upstairs stay roasting in the summer while the downstairs feels like a fridge? Running the fan on ON keeps air circulating between rooms and levels, evening out temperature stratification even when the AC compressor isn't engaged.
